  3. eightmethods said: i didn’t know assistants get paid. from my side of the world it’s experience in exchange for the photographer letting me assist in the shoots.
  4. michaeldavidfriberg said: I had a bunch of people saying it was 200 when I was living in ny but I’m definitely down with the whole “pay on the day of” thing.there were times I barely made rent even though I had been working like crazy.

  6. janetam said: agree! i wish it were the same for retouchers. nobody likes to nag ppl about not paying. some photogs even have the nerve to say “sucks but i can’t do anything until the mag pay.”
  7. gregpaul said: i’ve been paid as little as $100 a day although i’d say $250 seems pretty average for someone who knows what they’re doing.
  8. eliz said: I try to give 400 for ad stuff. Otherwise 350. I usually come in under budget on rentals because I don’t use anything so I put the extra dough toward assistants. My rep pays them but I try to keep the timeline quick. Rarely use assts for editorial.
  9. elleperez said: shit man i wish i assisted for you! i’ve gotten between $200 and $350. actually, on my last commercial job only had a $300 day rate. I feel like the rates have been going down, but also my favorite gigs are the ones where I get paid after the job..
  10. ryanpfluger said: unfortunately it is the new standard. I usually work my estimates to make up for it though.
  11. modellesbians said: Wow I’d love to be your assistant!
  12. matthewyake said: Right on man. I work for a couple of guys who pay on the day, I do my best work for them. The $250/$350 is spot on. That’s what it typically is in Baltimore/DC.
  13. tonyluong said: For the times I’ve assisted, it’s varied between $200 to $250 a day for editorial. Assisted on a ad campaign once and got $225 for the day which was a bit of a bummer but I was happy to be assisting, regardless. As for being paid on the spot, agreed.
  14. noahkalina said: my assistant rate varies depending on job. generally if a magazine let’s me bill for an assistant it’s $250. haven’t heard the $200 yet. I always pay on the spot, photographers who wait to get paid to pay assistant are assholes.
